About the Project
The Zanzibar Women’s Leadership in Adaptation (ZanzAdapt) Project empowers women at the frontlines of climate change to lead nature-based solutions. By addressing gender inequality and building climate resilience, ZanzAdapt creates pathways for women to take leadership roles in shaping sustainable futures for their communities.
Key Focus Areas
- Gender Equality – advancing women’s leadership and ensuring equitable participation.
- Climate-Adaptive Agroforestry – promoting resilient farming systems that improve livelihoods while restoring ecosystems.
- Mangrove Restoration – protecting and regenerating coastal forests that safeguard communities from climate impacts.
Pillars of Change
Land Rights and Resources
Establishes participatory and legal frameworks for equitable land use, enabling women to have an equal voice in decisions about natural resources.
Capacity Building
Provides technical training in mangrove conservation and climate-adaptive agroforestry, equipping women with the skills to lead climate adaptation.
Advocacy for Change
Through Gender Equality Training (GET) for duty-bearers and media advocacy, ZanzAdapt amplifies women’s voices, fosters an enabling environment, and influences societal norms toward equity.

Impact
Over 30 months, ZanzAdapt will reach 20,000 beneficiaries, with at least 80% being women. By integrating economic empowerment strategies and aligning with official development assistance (ODA) priorities, the project contributes to sustainable outcomes in one of the world’s most gender-unequal and climate-vulnerable regions.
As ZanzAdapt unfolds, it tells a story of resilience, empowerment, and transformation. Together, we are building a future where Zanzibar’s women lead the way in creating a more equitable and climate-resilient world.
